What are Product Variations?
Product variations represent the different configurations or options available for a single product. These variations allow you to offer the same base product in different sizes, colors, materials, or features for example. Product option are then assigned to each variation, such as small, medium and large, or red, blue and green.
Variations and options are reusable across different products. A variation can have multiple options, and you only need to select those that apply to your product before building child products. With PXM, you can create and manage thousands of unique product combinations in just a few clicks.
Key Concepts
- Variations are different configurations or features available for a product, such as size, color, or material.
- Options are the specific combination that the shopper selects, such as a T-shirt's size or a laptop's storage capacity.
- Parent Products are the main product that serve as the base for all variations.
- Child Products represent each unique combination of variations stemming from a parent product.
- Modifiers are the changes applied to each product option, like a price adjustment or SKU updates, based on the selected configuration.
- A Variation Matrix is a grid that combines all possible variations of a product, automatically generating a child product for each combination (e.g., a lounge chair with 4 fabrics and 4 leg colors would create 16 unique products).
Use Case 1: Fashion Retailer | A clothing store sells jackets with two variations: size and material. The size variation offers options like small, medium, large, while the material variation offers tweed, wool and leather, which is more expensive. The retailer dynamically creates child products for each possible combination, ensuring unique SKUs and pricing for each variation. |
Use Case 2: Video Game Store | A gaming retailer offers gaming consoles with customizable options for storage capacity (512GB, 1TB, 2TB) and limited-edition skins. Each combination of storage and skin creates a distinct product, giving gamers personalized choices while the system automatically manages pricing and inventory. |
